Bio
Robert L. Shaw holds a Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is a veteran of 22 years
of military aviation, including the U.S. Navy, Naval Reserve, and USAF Reserve. His active-
duty Navy assignments included service as a carrier-based fighter pilot, an Operation Test
pilot, and Test Director for the Navy's Air Combat Maneuvering Range (ACMR). ACMR was the
prototype for the Navy's current tactical Aircrew Combat Training System and the USAF's Red
Flag Measurement and Debriefing System. He has flown over 5,000 hours, mostly in fighters,
including the F-16, F-4 and F-14, and is a graduate of the Navy's Fighter Weapons School
(TOPGUN) and Strike Leader Attack Training Syllabus. Mr. Shaw retired from the USAF Reserve
with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
An avid aviation enthusiast, Shaw is a Certified Flight Instructor, Airline Transport Pilot and
civilian air-combat instructor. He is the founder and President of FCI Associates, Inc., which
provides consulting services in fighter aircraft and weapons systems performance evaluation, air
- combat training and training systems, and modeling and simulation.
Robert L. Shaw is the author of FIGHTER COMBAT: TACTICS AND MANEUVERING (Naval Institute Press,
1985), which has become a standard reference for the aviation arms of all the U.S. military
services as well as the defense Research & Development community. He is currently working on
a second book dealing with the history of fighter tactics and technology.
